Xian, formerly called Chang An, is the capital of Shanxi Province
and the biggest city in northwest China. With a history of over 3000 years, Xian served as
China's earliest capital for eleven dynasties, including the Western Zhou, the Qin, the
Western Han, the Sui and the Tang dynasties, for a period of 1180 years, longer than any
other. It was also the starting point of the renowed Silk Road, the main trade route
between China, central Asia and Europe.
