Tour Itinerary

Day 1. Rome at Leisure :  After your scheduled flight, there are complimentary transfers to your tour hotel departing at; 09.30, 12.30 and 15.30. After checking in, there's time at leisure to explore or relax. Later, get together with your Tour Director and fellow passengers for a welcome drink, followed by a highlight dinner of local cuisine with entertainment. Hotel: Beverly Hills or Albani. (HD)

Day 2. Rome Sightseeing : This morning we set off on our in-depth sightseeing tour with a local guide, which takes us first into the Vatican Museums and then to the Sistine Chapel. We admire the famous ceiling painted by Michelangelo and then wonder at his emotive work 'Pieta' inside the magnificent St Peter's Basilica. Now, we cross the River Tiber to ancient, classical Rome. We visit the world's largest arena, and one of its oldest ?the Colosseum, scene of many gladiatorial contests. Afterwards, we overlook the Roman Forum. Then there is time at leisure to reflect and relax or maybe window shop along the Via Condotti with its many tempting designer boutiques? (BB)

Day 3. Rome - Assisi : We leave Rome this morning, following the broad valley of the River Tiber until we reach the rounded hills of Umbria, which form part of the Appenine chain. Our destination today is the peaceful hilltop town of Assisi, the home of St Francis. First, we visit the the Basilica of St Mary of the Angels, built in the valley on the site of the original Porziuncule Chapel foundations. Then we continue up Mount Subasio to the town, where we visit the great Basilica of St Francis with its magnificent frescoes by the artist Giotto. Hotel: Subasio. (BB,D)

Day 4. Assisi - Venice : Leaving Venice , we drive along the scenic Brenta Canal with its magnificent Palladian villas. We cross the plain of the Po River and traverse the Appenines, the backbone of Italy, to reach the Arno valley. We now follow the river west to Pisa. Here we see the Leaning Tower, where elaborate steps have been taken to prevent this landmark from falling over! There is also time to admire the white marble cathedral and Baptistry, before we continue to The Tuscan Spa resort of Montecatini. Hotel: Ambasciatori. (BB)

Day 5. Venic - Tuscany : Leaving Venice , we drive along the scenic Brenta Canal with its magnificent Palladian villas. Day 6. Tuscany - Florence : We drive to the Tuscan capital, Florence, where our sightseeing tour includes a guided visit to the Academy Gallery, viewing Michelangelo's 'David'. We enjoy a walking tour, taking in such highlights as the marble Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, Giotto's belltower, the Gates of Paradise and Piazza Signoria. Florence is also famous for the high quality of its luxury goods, and we are treated to a demonstration of leatherwork in the area around Santa Croce Basilica. Then, there's time at leisure to shop! Day 7. Tuscany - Sorrento : Through the volcanic hills of Frascati to Cassino, where we visit the peaceful Commonwealth Cemetery, overlooked by the monastery of Montecassino, birthplace of the Benedictine order. Then past Naples, where a dramatic clifftop drive brings us to Sorrento. Hotel: Corallo. (BB)

Day 8. Isle of Capri Excursion : This morning we visit a workshop to observe the local craft of marquetry inlay woodworking or 'intarsio'. Then to the cosmopolitan island of Capri, which for 2,000 years has beckoned visitors from Augustus and Tiberius Caesar to Gracie Fields! Arriving at Marina Grande by boat, we ascend to Capri Town by funicular railway. We have time to wander through the shops or enjoy fabulous views out over the Mediterranean Sea. Don't miss the chance to visit the Blue Grotto! (BB,D)

Day 9. Sorrento - Rome : A short drive North from Sorrento lies Pompeii, preserved by layers of ash from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD79. With a local guide, a tour of the excavations here brings this ancient city to life. Then through the fields of Campania and Latium to Rome. Hotel: Massimo D'Azeglio. (BB)

Day 10.Rome : Our memorable tour ends today after breakfast with a transfer to Rome Airport for your return flight. (BB)
