Tour Itinerary

Day 1. Arrival in Munich, Germany : Time to rest or to start exploring the Bavarian capital. At 6 p.m. meet your traveling companions for a welcome drink followed by dinner hosted by your tour director. (D)

Day 2. Munich : An expertly guided tour of Germany's "secret capital" includes the Olympic Stadium, 1,000-foot-high Television Tower, Marienplatz with the Old and New Town Hall, and the Gothic Frauenkirche. Also visit NYMPHENBURG PARK and the exquisite AMALIENBURG hunting lodge within. Afternoon to explore the town's well-known Christmas Market at your own pace and try the famous Lebkuchen and Gluhwein. You can purchase the Christmas Market Gluhwein mug as a special souvenir. Tonight is your chance to sample hearty Bavarian fare in one of Munich's typical restaurants; later you may want to tackle a stein of beer at the Hofbrauhaus. (BB)

Day 3. Munich-Strasbourg** : This morning visit Ulm, which is noted for its CATHEDRAL featuring the tallest spire in the world (528 ft.). Proceed to Strasbourg, seat of the Council of Europe and of the European Parliament and renowned for its Christmas Markets. Day 4. Strasbourg** : An expertly guided tour of Alsace's capital includes PLACE GUTENBERG, with the statue of the inventor of the printing press; the main square, PLACE KLEBER; the lovely LA PETITE FRANCE district; and the GOTHIC CATHEDRAL. Then board a glass-roofed CANAL BOAT for a unique view of this delightful city. Afternoon at leisure. Time to explore the lively CHRISTMAS MARKET at your own pace. The most magical time to visit is in the evening when twinkling lights reflecting on handmade glass ornaments beckon you to check out the booths. Day 5. Strasbourg**. Excursion to Colmar : Explore Alsace, the province that caused many wars between France and Germany. In the morning visit COLMAR and the DOMINICAN CHURCH to view the painting of the Virgin against a golden background, decorated with white and red rose bushes full of birds. Let your nose guide you to the smell of roasted almonds and candy floss (cotton candy) at the local CHRISTMAS MARKET. Art buffs will surely want to visit the UNTERLINDEN MUSEUM to see the perfect perspective of master Grunewald's Altarpiece. Early afternoon return to Strasbourg. Day 6. Strasbourg**-Nuremberg : This morning time to wander around spectacular Rothenburg. Admire its ramparts and towers, cobbled lanes, and 16th-century houses. Childhood memories come to life as you see the countless figurines and Christmas crafts in KATHE WOHLFAHRT'S CHRISTMAS VILLAGE, one of the finest Christmas stores in Germany. Then on to Nuremberg, the town of children's toys and gingerbread. (BB,D)

Day 7. Nuremberg-Berlin : On the way to Germany's capital, pass by Richard Wagner's Bayreuth before you cross the former East-West German border. Head north for an afternoon arrival in Berlin. (BB,D)

Day 8. Berlin : Guided sightseeing in the once-divided metropolis includes the elegant Ku-Damm with the bomb-damaged tower of Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, the Reichstag, Check Point Charlie, monumental Brandenburg Gate, Charlottenburg Palace, and the Victory Column in the vast Tiergarten Park. Drive along Unter den Linden Boulevard and past the German State Opera House. Then visit the famous PERGAMON MUSEUM, housing one of Europe's most precious collections of art treasures. The afternoon is free, and an optional excursion to historic Potsdam is available. Tonight is your chance to sample Berlin's celebrated night life and her fine restaurants serving holiday specialties. (BB)
