Tour Itinerary

Day 1. Arrival in Stockholm, Sweden : Welcome to the winter wonderland. At this latitude, the clear winter sky with sparkling stars and the low sun through the short days give a fantastic winter light that will forever frame this genuine Christmas experience. May we suggest a visit to "Ostermalms hallen" the old indoor food market for the first taste of Swedish Christmas specialties? At 6 p.m. meet your traveling companions for a welcome drink followed by dinner hosted by your tour director. (D)

Day 2. Stockholm : The Swedish capital owes its beauty to its unique setting on 14 islands between Lake Malar and the Baltic. Sightseeing with a local guide features the City Hall, Riddarholm Church, the Royal Palace, and the OLD TOWN ISLAND with its picture postcard narrow streets, art shops, and market square. Afternoon at leisure to enjoy the festive candlelit northern atmosphere. (FB)

Day 3. Stockholm : Spend the whole day exploring Stockholm at your own pace or join an included morning excursion to Uppsala, Scandinavia's oldest university town. Admire the glorious stained-glass windows in its huge GOTHIC CATHEDRAL. Then a scenic drive through the country to the picturesque village of Sigtuna, seat of Sweden's Viking Kings around the turn of the past millennium, and the cradle of Swedish Christianity. This afternoon you might like to join an optional boat trip to one of the charming villages in the Stockholm archipelago (weather permitting) or visit a traditional Christmas market followed by tasting the delicacies that make up a traditional Swedish Christmas dinner. (FB)

Day 4. Stockholm-Oslo, Norway : Trace the King's Road, formerly a mighty link between the northern capitals, now connecting Oslo and Stockholm. Pass modern Eskilstuna, the ancient garrison town of Orebro, Karlstad on Lake Vanern, and on to scenic Varmland, the area so beautifully described in Selma Lagerlof's Saga of Gosta Berling. Cross the Norwegian border and continue to Oslo. (FB,D)

Day 5. Oslo : Wake up in a city famous for skiing, beautifully located between the Oslofjord and Mount Holmenkollen. Morning sightseeing features such landmarks as the National Theater, Parliament, and the Royal Palace. If weather permits, stroll through magnificent FROGNER PARK with Gustav Vigeland's 193 extraordinary bronze and granite sculptures. Finally visit the modern CITY HALL and admire its beautiful modern frescoes. Afternoon and evening at leisure. Join an optional tour to the Viking Ships and the Folk museum with the 1000-year-old Stave church, or to Santa Claus' post office followed by a traditional Christmas evening. (FB)

Day 6. Oslo : Overnight cruise to Copenhagen, Denmark. Morning at leisure. This afternoon cruise out of the Oslofjord on board your luxurious overnight ferry to Copenhagen. (FB,D)

Day 7. Copenhagen: Disembark in Scandinavia's largest and liveliest metropolis. Guided sightseeing features the National Museum and the Royal Theater; stop for pictures of Amalienborg Palace and the world-famous statue of the wistful Little Mermaid. Drive past the Church of Our Savior and the Stock Exchange on the way to Christiansborg Palace where you visit the elegant ROYAL RECEPTION ROOMS (if closed, admire the Danish Crown Jewels at ROSENBORG CASTLE). Afternoon at leisure. (FB)

Day 8. Copenhagen : A whole day at leisure to delight in the festive Christmas atmosphere of the capital, or take part in an included excursion: drive over the world's largest suspension bridge constructed off-shore to the fairy-tale island of Funen and visit HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN'S HOME at Odense. Tonight a fitting farewell to Scandinavia: enjoy the bright lights and animation of TIVOLI GARDENS followed by a Christmas dinner Danish-style. (FB,D)

Day 9. Tour ends today after breakfast.
